National Archaeological Museum of Luni, Massa Carrara

Opened in 1964, in order to host a wide collection of archaeological finds of the area, it was reorganized in 1981 in order to create one of the best exhibitions of Archaeology. The area is located near the old Magra River mouth. Used a landing place during the Etruscan Age and controlled by the Ligurian, it was a military harbour during the Roman period, and then, after the deportation of 47,000 Ligurian of Apuan Alps, in 180 B.C. it became a roman colony.

The Harbour, since the Greek Period, was dedicated to the Goddess Selene, Luna for the Romans, who dedicated the city to her. In the Museum and in the archaeological area, it is possible to see sacred architectural sections: the Capitolium, the Goddess Luna Temple, the Big Temple (fragment of flooring in republican “opus signinum” with inscription by duoviri) and the Diana Temple.
In this area it is possible to see also houses of the roman period, for example the Casa degli Affreschi (Frescos’ House), the Casa dei Mosaici (Mosaic’ House), the Domus settentrionale (Northern House), the Decumano Massimo (Decumanus Maximum), the Forum Portal and some locations linked to the business: the Theatre, the Christian Basilica with three naves (Carolingian period). Behind the East Portal you can see the Amphitheatre and the impressive Mausoleo.
