History of the Village Bagno a Ripoli, near Florence
It was probably born as an Etruscan village under the name of Marm and from the III century B.C. it turned into a top level trade centre. It was named "Quarto" (literally "Fourth") because because it was located at the fourth mile from Florentia on the route of the consular road Cassia. Since it stood on the South East side of the Ripoli plain, which was subject to recurrent floodings of river Arno, it ows the toponym Ripulae to the barrages that were built in order to bank up the water.
In the thirteenth century it was seat of the League of Ripoli, one of the 72 community federations, in which the surrounding countryside of Florence was divided and it extended as far as the right bank of Arno.
This is a territory that has always based its economy on agriculture; during the grand ducal period it was considered a model for agricultural industry.
