Castles in Barberino Di Mugello near Florence

Castle of Barberino (Castello di Barberino): it was destroyed by the city of Florence in 1352, towards the end of the 7th century it was restored by the Cattani family and used as country residence. It is surrounded by high cypresses and characterized by an italian garden. It is Private Property.

Castle of Villanova (castello di Villanova): ancient property of the noble family Ubaldini da Villanuova built around 1250. It is believed that the building was home for a considerable group of people, given that inside the walls of the castle there are traces of a community and the church of San Jacopo. Both church and castle were purchased in 1611 by Marquis Gerini and included in the estate and the garden of Villa delle Maschere, one of the biggest country villas in the area of Mugello (today under restoration). The castle we see today was built in the 19th century and has been recently restored.

Villa Torre il Palagio (already Villa La Torre): unfortunately there is not much left of the ancient fortified building of the 15th century, that belonged to the Pulci family, where Lorenzo il Magnifico and his poet friends used to spend time together. The villa we see today has got nineteenth-century features; the facade is very impressive, being decorated with monochromatic geometrical patterns. Advisable to visit: the big garden that has many century old trees.
