History of Borgo San Lorenzo near Florence
It was theatre of the legendary fights between Guelphs and Ghibellines and of the alternate destiny of Florence itself. In 1351 the walls of which we still have some remains were built, as well as two doors: Porta Fiorentina and Porta dell'Orologio.
In 1440 the village was besieged by Niccolò Piccinino from side of the Albizi family; in 1527 it was stronghold against the French. During the rule of the grand duke the village complied with its administration and it was renovated and improved under many aspects.
In 1906 Galileo and Chino Chini founded the manufacture of Fornaci san Lorenzo, famous for the production of vases, cahe pots, mugs, jugs, ceramic and stoneware umbrella stands, covering materials and majolica tiles in Liberty style.
In 1913 the town was the venue for the first Industrial Agricultural Exposition in the area of Mugello and in Val di Sieve; this area was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1919. In 1943 it was target for the bombing of the British aviation; in 1944 many attacks were directed to the bridges of the railway.
