Things to see in Fiesole near Florence
There is a great choice for touristic places. First of all it is advisable to see the archeological area with the Teatro Romano (Roman theatre) and the Museo Archeologico (archeological museum) in 1, Portigiani street (tel. 0039 055 59477), but also the panoramic shot (terrace over Florence), the monastery of San Francesco and the public park in San Francesco street.
For a medieval dream -like path there is the Castello di Vincigliata (Castle of Vincigliata),in 15 Vincigliata street, bought and rebuilt in 1855 by John Temple Leader from an ancient medieval fortress that belonged to the Alessandri family. Today it is a private house but there is also the possibility of guided tours for groups with wine tasting by calling for reservations (tel. 0039 055 599556).
In Autumn and Spring the town council organizes guided tours for the gardens of the Fiesole villas Le Balze,Fontelucente, Maiano, Medici, Riposo dei Vescovi, Il Roseto, La Torraccia, Vincigliata and Castel di Poggio (huge feudal fortified building of unknown origin, probably of the 3rd century).
