Fucecchio on the Arno near Florence
Fucecchio is located half way between Florence (45 kms) and Pisa (33 kms). It stands on the right bank of the Arno river near the natural basin of the Padule (marshes), from which it takes its name, and on the hilly area of the Cerbaie.
The territory, which extends over an area of 65.3 sq kms and numbers 21,040 inhabitants (12/31/1999), is comprised of the hill which hosts the historic centre and the plane, from the lowland of the Padule to the hilly area of the Cerbaie. The plane was formed by the flood deposits of the Arno and is comprised of land especially favourable for farming.
The lowlands of the Padule has assumed the aspect of a marsh since the material brought down from the Valdinievole by the water flow and the floods of the Arno have prevented the free flow of the waters. The area was reclaimed at the end of the 18th century.
The hilly area on the boundary of the municipality is made up of the Cerbaie, which rise to modest quotas between the Bientina marshes and those of Fucecchio. It is comprised of soils made up of sand and clay. It was covered exclusively by forests at one time and is now partially cultivated.
