Livorno's Cultural Traditions, Tuscany

A multitude of sights, sounds and scents enchant the visitor in the city where Pietro Mascagni, Giovanni Fattori, Amedeo Modigliani and Giorgio Caproni were born.

Reminders of particular interest to lovers of opera, art and history can be found in the town. Works by nineteenth century Tuscan painters can be admired at the “Giovanni Fattori” Civic Museum, which also organises international exhibitions of contemporary art.

The historic Goldoni Theatre will house the Mascagni Museum (Museo Mascagnano) dedicated to music. Historic and religious reminders of the “Nations” which populated Livorno can be seen in the "Yeshiva Marini" Jewish Museum (Museo Ebraico), the St. Ranieri Oratory (Oratorio di S. Ranieri), the St. Giulia Museum (Museo di Santa Giulia), the United Greek Church (Chiesa dei Greci Uniti) and in the architecture of the Armenian Church (Chiesa degli Armeni).

Treasures from the sea can be seen in the Mediterranean Natural History Museum at Villa Henderson, which combines antique finds with modern educational tours, and also has a Botanic Garden.

Live examples of Mediterranean fauna can be found in the “Diacinto Cestoni” Aquarium.
