Churches in Gambassi Terme in the Elsa Valley near Florence

In the historic centre, the Vecchia Chiesa Parrocchiale (Old Parochial Church), dedicated to Saints Jacopo and Stefano, dating back to the 1200’s, which has evidently been tampered with, has been transformed into a nursing home for the eldely.

The Nuova Chiesa Parrocchiale (New Parochial Church ), of 1940, contains precious paintings: two “Madonna on the Throne with Saints”, one by Biagio d’Antonio Tucci and the other attributed to Pier Francesco Fiorentino and “Saint Sebastiano between two Saints”, by Baccio Gorini.

In the Chiesa della Misericordia (Church of the Misericordia), there are valuable statues in terracotta which came from the ancient Church of S. Luca, demolished in 1786.

Along the Via Gonnelli, there is a tabernacle which contains a “Madonna with Child” from 15th century Tuscan school.

The Pieve di Santa Maria a Chianni (Parish Church of Santa Maria a Chianni), dating back to the 12th century, was an important stop along the Via Francigena, for Castelfiorentino. The influence of Pisa and Lucca is evident in the facade with three arches and the blind loggias.

The inside, with its three-nave basilica design and high piers, is set up on a latin cross scheme, with a transept with five arches; the presbytery is elevated. Noteworthy are the sculpted capitals with the probable name of the author “Ioh[annes] Bundivulus”. The vaulted wooden ceiling and the terracotta ornamentation of the chior (16th century)are valuable and probably the work of Cagni di Gambassi; the 19th century basin in the sacristy is also in terracotta.
