Greve in the Chianti Region of Tuscany
The most ancient inhabited nucleus from which the centre of Greve originated is almost certainly to be found on the hill of S. Francesco, where a donation was documentated as early as the 11th century, by St. Bernardo degli Uberti to the Monastery of St. Salvi. Later it was the seat of an ancient hospital and at the end of the 1400’s a small settlement of the order of the Franciscan monks.
The opening of various commercial opportunities determined the birth of the Greve market, at the centre of a densly populated area, already rich in parishes and rural churches and dotted with castles and feudal villages.
The most ancient part of the inhabited area is located around the convent of S. Francesco and the market square which remained almost intact until the 19th century. Only following the Unification of Italy and the assignment of city seat, the old “mercatale a Greve” (Greve market) would become one of the most important centres of the valley.
