Pelago in the Val di Sieve in Tuscany

The most ancient documentation of Pelago dates back to 1089.
Its territory was possessed for many years by the Guidi Counts of Poppi, who handed down many endowments to the Monks of Vallombrosa. On the contrary, the castle, at least from the 13th century, was under the authority of the Cattani from Diacceto.

Up until the 15th century, many disputes arose between the Cattani, the monks of Camaldoli, the bishop of Fiesole and the Republic of Florence, whose hegemony was recognized from the first half of the 1200'’. In 1445, in order to calm the quarrelling, Pope Eugenio IV emitted a brief conferming Cattani from Diacceto to be the owner of the castle.

Passing to the Florentine state in modern times, Pelago was constituted as a chief municipality in 1808 by the Napoleonic administration, absorbing the 14th century Lega of Diacceto. In 1836-37, the right area and the top part of the Vicano valley became part of the municipality of Pelago. In 1915, a large part of the municipal territory of Pelago detatched itself to form the new Municipality of Rufina.
