Things to see around Pelago in the Val di Sieve in Tuscany

The historical centre of Pelago is built on a Medieval village characterized by a large square slanting downhill, paved in stone and surrounded by groups of houses, most of which have loggias.

The collection of Sacred art in the church of S.Clemente, the “miraculous” Crucifix in the Oratory of the Compania and the fountain of the “compagni di Viaggio” (travelling companions) are sites to see. Continuing along the road for Vallombrosa 4 kms, you see the tower of Ristonch,i which was the last fortress of the Guelfs when they escaped from Florence.

The Nipozzano Castle, built around the year 1000 and today villa-farm of the Frescobaldi family, is on the state road SS 70 for Consuma. Borselli, at 800 metres above sea level, is a place of naturalistic interest and good for walking excursions.

The Medieval church of S. Margherita in Tosina, containing a beautiful triptych by Mariotto di Nardo, is in the area. Higher up, the SS 70 takes you to the Consuma (1050 metres), the valley that extends to the Casentino, which goes on to Vallombrosa on a beautiful road flanked by centuries-old beech trees.
