Things to see in Pontassieve in the Val Di Sieve in Tuscany

The municipal territory has a great variety of scenery which makes it an ideal place for nature lovers. Starting from the lower valley of the Sieve and the Arno and climbing up along the hills to the plateaus cultivated with grapes and olives, interspersed with vast extentions of woodland, arriving to the top of the summit of Mount Giovi and the pre-Appennines that are covered with snow in winter.

Pontassieve, the main centre of the Sieve valley, contains three 14th century gates: the Florentine gate, Aretina gate and Filicaia gate and traces of the perimetrecal city walls. The bridge on the Sieve, called the Medici bridge, which dates to the late 1500’s, has much more ancient origins.

The surrounding areas are rich in Medieval and Renaissance history: the Romanic parish churches of S.Giovanni Battista in Remole, in Sieci and S.Martino in Lobaco; the Medieval castle in Trebbio near S. Brigida and the ancient Medieval tower in Montebonello on the side of the Sieve valley which decends from Mount Giovi at the territorial boundary with Rufina; the 17th century Romanic monastery and sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso in Rosano.
