History of Reggello in the Val d'Arno in Tuscany

Since the Etruscan era, this territory has been crossed by a road connecting Fiesole and Arezzo, and on this same plan, the Romans constructed a ramification of the Cassia consular road, hence the place-name Cascia. The Road of Seven Bridges traces the same plan as the Roman Cassia Vetus.

Reggello was founded as a market town at the crossroads of these important passageways. The coat of arms of the Municipality of Reggello includes part of its history: There are a bear, a red cross on a sfere and an oak. The oak was the symbol of the League of Cascia. The leagues were groups of plebes, people and small rural comunities, organized to defend and strengthen themselves through commerce and agriculture.

The antique name “Castelnuovo della Pieve di Cascia” was changed under the Lorena, at the time of Pietro Leopoldo, to “Reggello”, which comes from “rege”, a term that indicated the antique holdings of the Longobards. The sfere with the red cross indicates the subjugation of the people to Florence, and the tree represents the village of Leccio (oak).
