History of Rignano sull'Arno in the Upper Val d'Arno in Tuscany
In the first decades after the year 1000, a castle was erected near the parish church of San Leolino, which towards the end of the 12th century was under the direction of the nuns of Sant’Ellero (confirmed in 1191 by the Emperor Arrigo VI) and later under the monks of Vallombrosa.
In a document dated the first half of the 14th century, an ancient settlement results to have already been demoted to a “castellare” (manor), but at the same time a small village was growing at a bridge on the Arno built by the Florentine Republic. In the meantime, the surrounding area had become the site of numerous villas belonging to rich Florentines.
With the law of the Granduchy of 1773, Rignano became one of the seventy towns of the Florentine countryside and thirteen parishes were incorporated. Vespasiano da Bisticci (1421-1498), a literary humanist and Ardengo Soffici (1879-1964), a painter and sculptor, were born in Rignano.
