History of Rufina in the Val Di Sieve in Tuscany

In feudal times, the jurisdiction of the territory of the municipality of Rufina was divided between the bishops of Fiesole and the Guidi counts. The Rufina castle was shared between the two lordships, but only until the 13th century, when the bishops took over. The oldest documents showing the secular dominion of the bishops are two papal bulls dating back to 1103 and 1134.

Rufina was included in the Diacceto League (1311) with the Florentine conquist of the countryside. With the so called “riforma delle comunità” (community reform) during the Lorena rule (1774), the Diacceto League was united with that of Monteloro to form the new community of Ponte a Sieve.

The territory of the ancient League of Diacceto was detatched from this administration during the Napoleonic rule (1809), and the new community of Pelago was formed in which the present territory of Rufina was contained. The present municipality of Rufina was formed by deputy-decree on 2 December 1915.
