History of San Godenzo in the Val di Sieve in Tuscany

The name San Godenzo, derives from San Gaudenzio, a hermit who lived in these mountains in the 5th-6th century. The Benedictine abbey, where the settlement began, was built in his honor in the 11th century.

On the 8th of June 1302, the church was the seat of a meeting between the Ghibellines and white Guelf Florentine exiles who asked the Ubaldinis and the Guidis for help in order to return to Florence. Dante Alighieri was among them.
The Guidi Counts dominated San Godenzo until 1344, the year it was ceeded with the surrounding mountains, to the Municipality of Florence.
From 1500 to 1700, Florence dominated all of the Mugello.

In 1737, the Lorena took over and brought on better times which lasted until the arrival of Napoleon and the construction of the Reign of Etruria. The Hapsburg-Lorena government then took over. Leopoldo II finished construction of the Forlì road and built the “Muraglione” pass which permitted the exchange of horses, protected from the violent winds which blow on the road.
