Sights to see in San Godenzo in the Val di Sieve in Tuscany
San Godenzo, immersed in woods of chestnut and located in an elevated, panoramic position, is famous for the meeting between the Ghibellines and white Guelf exiles held here in 1302. 1302. The San Gaudenzio Abbey, dedicated to the hermit who is supposed to have lived here in the paleo-christian age, was founded around 1029 and contains an Annunciation attributed to Franciabigio.
Castagno D’Andrea, birthplace of the celebrated artist, Andrea del Castagno, is a one of the most interesting resorts. It is the starting point for excursions in the north central Appennines to Mount Falterona (1654 metres) Falco and Acuto (1658 metres), where on a clear day, you can see a view from the Adriatic Sea to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
It is in fact the entrance to the Casentino Forest National Park. It has many lakes and streams and there have been many landslides over the years, beginning with the story which narrates of little Andrea (called del Castagno) who was forced to emigrate to Corella because of a landslide.
The Waterfalls of Acquacheta are located at the joining point of the Troncalosso and Acquacheta streams. They are very evocative and are surrounded by beautiful, naturalistic scenery.
A visit to the Church of San Martino is a must. It was restored after the second World War and contains a fresco of the Crucifixion with the Madonna and Saint John by Pietro Annigoni (1958).
Guided nature tours of the park are possible year ‘round. Walking, biking and horseriding paths are all well marked. Many hiking associations have marked trails here – GEA (Grande Escursione Appenninica), SO.F.T. (Sorgenti di Firenze Trekking) and C.A.I. (Club Alpino Italiano).
