History of Scarperia in the Province of Florence
In 1299 the Council of the Onehundred (Consiglio dei Cento) in Florence decided to build new towns in order to reorganize and control the territory; therefore in 1306, with the surrender of the Ubaldini family, landowners of Mugello, Scarperia started to be built up and in 1415 it was seat of the Vicariate, that represented the administrative and judicial power of Florence and the castle was enlarged in order to offer the Vicar worthy hospitality. The vicars that followed one another over the years left in the Building of the Vicariate their coat of arms, either engraved or painted.
Northwards, due to the opening of the new carriage road Futa, that occurred towards the half of the 18th century, the street of Giogo, the villages in the area of Scarperia, San Piero A Sieve and Firenzuola had a big decrease in traffic, that left them isolated from the new trading routes.
