History of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Chianti, Tuscany
The village appears for the first time in a map dated 780, with the name Tabernulae, but the Pesa valley appears to have been heavily populated starting from the 7th-8th century b.c. Remains of Etruscan settlements of certain importance have been found in the area.
The area later developed through the union of three rural medieval villages: Tavarnelle, Borghetto and Mocale, located on the road between Florence and the medieval Via Francigena. The strategic geographical position aided the development of castle settlements on the easily defensible highlands which controlled the viability and the properties.
Open villages for travellers’ resting posts and commerce developed on the ridged planes near the rivers and roads. In 1898, Tavarnelle became a municipality, together with the hamlets of Sambuca and San Donato.
