History of Vaglia in the Mugello Valley, Province of Florence

At the beginning of the Christian era, the first villages developed around the parish churches, like that of San Pietro in Vaglia, cited in a document dated 983, signed by Ottone II. Until the 14th century, Vaglia was governed by the bishops, and then afterwards passed to the Municipality of Florence and was inserted into the Santa Maria Novella quarter and under the Tagliaferro League, which in 1551, came under the Vicariate of Scarperia.

In the second half of the 18th century, with the rebirth of the Grand duchy of Tuscany, under Pietro Leopoldo, Vaglia developed greatly. In particular, thanks to the construction of the Bologna Regia Postal road, which substituted the old way of having to climb up Mount Morello. Many parochial parish churches were rebuilt or restored in this period.

The construction of the Florence-Faenza railway, started in 1881 and finished in 1893, was a great boost to the town. Destroyed during the last World War, the “Faentina” line has only recently begun service again with two stops in the area – Vaglia and Fontebuona.

The municipality of Vaglia sufferred great distruction during the last World War and in the following period, it was entirely restored, taking over and enlarging the urban set-up which was the result of many centuries of history.
