Livorno und die altstadt - Toskana
Das im Laufe des 17. Jh. errichtete, charakteristische Viertel "Venezia Nuova" zeigt auch heute noch seine ursprüngliche Anlage: besonders eindrucksvoll sind die Medici-Kanäle, ein dichtes Geflecht aus befahrbaren Wasserstraßen, welche die Lagergebäude mit den Wohnhäusern der Händler verbanden.
Wie in Venedig haben sie ihre Grundmauern und Eingänge auf Wasserhöhe mit Zugang zu den Räumen, die früher der Warenlagerung dienten. Bei einem Spaziergang in der Via Borra kann man noch heute die elegante Architektur bestaunen.
Im Viertel gibt es viele religiöse und zivile Gebäude, wie z.B. die "Bottini dell’Olio", aus dem 18. Jh. stammende, schöne Lagerräume, die einst zur Aufbewahrung von Öl dienten. Noch heute wird die "Piazza della Repubblica" wegen seiner besonderen Anlage bewundert.
Der Platz stellt in Wirklichkeit eine eindrucksvolle Brücke dar, die einen großen Abschnitt des befahrbaren Kanals überdeckt.
