Island of Elba - History
Rome had not yet been founded and the Island of Elba was already the stage of encounters between the various peoples of th Mediterranean. The Greeks, the Eutruscans and the Carthaginians disputed the richness of its underground, but even during the Iron Age the island was fought over for its strategic position.
Therefore there are many different itineraries that deserve a visit to rediscover the value of humanity and culture: the trails of the shepherds of the Neolithic, the Roman villas from the 1st Century, the Pisan Country Churches dating from 11th century, the medieval castles and the mighty Renaissance fortifications.
From Napoleon’s exile, lasted 10 months, there are two residences full of furniture and curios, a precious theater, the mask and the mould of a hand, the flag with the three bees, standard of his small reign.The island is a favorite theme for the Macchiaioli painters and every year becomes the home to artists from all over the world that meet in quiet coteries, gates open for endless parties in honours of reminiscences.
