L’église de San Giovanni in Campo, située à moitié chemin du Mont Perone en position dominante sur les villages de San Piero et Sant’Ilario, constitue l’édifice religieux le plus vaste d’époque romane encore présent sur l’île.
La construction, qui remonte de par ses caractéristiques architectoniques à la deuxième moitié du XIIème siècle, répète la même ichnographie des autres églises de l’île d’Elbe: une unique nef rectangulaire avec au fond une abside en demi-cercle. Tout l’édifice a les parois recouvertes d’assises en granit (des carrières encore en vigueur émergent non loin de l’église) avec des bossages parfaitement sculptés de dimensions décroissantes vers le haut. La façade est intéressante, encadrée par deux pilastres angulaires, elle présente en son sommet un campanile à arcades en bonne partie intègre.
