Il cotto di Impruneta - Firenze in Toscana

 

La terracotta più famosa è quella di Impruneta, un'antica cittadina a sud di Firenze. Si ottiene lavorando l'argilla con particolari tecniche e cuocendola poi in fornace. L''argilla in questa zona ha caratteristiche particolari: è scistosa, molto ricca di ferro, molto malleabile e allo stesso tempo elastica e resistente. La materia prima viene estratta a Impruneta e nelle vicinanze, al Ferrone, a Tavarnuzze o nella Val di Greve. La tradizione della lavorazione della terracotta affonda le radici nel Medio Evo, le dinastie che lavorano la terracotta risalgono al Trecento; l'argilla plasmata e cotta ha connotato il paesaggio, l'architettura, il decoro urbano, l'economia locale.

 

Tradizionalmente con la terracotta si realizzavano vasi, catini, stoviglie, mattoni; all'Impruneta ci si andò specializzando nella lavorazione di orci, anche di grandi dimensioni, per contenere l'olio e il vino, le altre importantissime produzioni della zona. Nel corso dei secoli, soprattutto grazie alla alta resistenza alle intemperie, le lavorazioni in terracotta andarono a coprire tetti, ornare giardini, decorare facciate. La tradizione del cotto imprunetino resiste ancora oggi e i manufatti, realizzati nelle piccole e grandi fornaci della zona, sono un punto di riferimento sia nell'edilizia che nell'arredamento e nel decoro.
