Durante il Medioevo fu un importante mercatale sviluppatosi lungo la strada per il Valdarno. I numerosi castelli e pievi nei dintorni sono testimonianza di un’intensa e prospera attività agricola e commerciale. Tra i castelli, tutti di impianto medievale, sono particolarmente interessanti quello di Vertine, quello di Meleto con due imponenti torri angolari rotonde, quello di Barbischio e soprattutto il castello di Brolio. Sulle mura e i bastioni che lo circondano corre un camminamento di ronda da cui si gode un bellissimo panorama del Chianti e della campagna senese. Il castello, completamente distrutto nel 1478, fu ricostruito nel secolo scorso per volere di Bettino Ricasoli.
A meno di 1 Km. da Gaiole è da visitare la bella pieve romanica di Spaltenna mentre, sulla strada per il Valdarno, immersa nel verde di abeti secolari, merita una sosta la Badia a Coltibuono. Things to see in San Pietro a Sieve in the Province of Florence
The Medici Castle in Trebbio: Located in the Trebbio hamlet, it is a villa-castle built by Michelozzo on commission of Cosimo il Vecchio de’ Medici over the ruins of a feudal tower. Visit the 17th century arbor and the Italian style gardens. (only guided group tours by appointment).
The Bosco ai Frati Convent: Built by the Ubaldini family before the year 1000, and purchased by Cosimo il Vecchio de’ Medici, who had it restored by Michelozzo. On the inside of the convent are the de' Medici Hall, a small sacred arts museum which contains a Crucifix attributed to Donatello and paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries.
The Medici Fortress in San Martino: A 16th century fortress desired by the Granduke Cosimo I de’ Medici, strong-hold of the Mugello valley. It was finished by Ferdinando I who entrusted the job to Bernardo Buontalenti. The surrounding walls are more than a mile in length and are 12 metres high. Cannons were located in the still existing wide bastions.
