Tuscany is the fifth largest region in Italy. Wedged deeply like a triangle in the heart of Italy, it constitutes a transitional, area between the Po Delta and Liguria, which are highly industrialized, and those Italian regions which are still principally agricultural. It stretches over the western side of the Apennines and includes the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. It lies on the sea to the west and south-west and borders with Liguria to the north-west, Emilia-Romagna to the north, the Marches and Umbria to the east, and Latium to the south-east.
Its limits are clearly defined to the north but less evident to the east, crossing the main ridge of the Tusco-Emilian Apennines and taking in the upper Val Tiberina, becoming even more uncertain to the south-east and south where they appear to be justified only for historical, linguistic and generally cultural reasons.

Massa Carrara en Toscane - Château Malaspina de Massa
Le château domine la ville du haut d'un coteau rocheux qui se trouve aux pentes des Alpes Apuanes. Le site fut probablement occupé pendant le haut Moyen-Âge par les marquis de Massa, quoique la première documentation écrite concernant le château remonte au XIIème siècle. Pendant le XVème siècle Massa passe sous la domination des Marquis Malaspina de Fosdinovo. Ces derniers transformèrent le château en résidence, tout en effectuant d'importantes interventions architectoniques, comprenant aussi des modernisations des structures défensives, qui furent achevées au XVIIème siècle.
Le complexe architectonique, qui à la fin du XIXème siècle fut définitivement transformé en prison (fonction qu'il garda jusqu'en 1946) se compose aujourd'hui, après les travaux de restauration, de trois unités distinctes: le puissant mur d'enceinte, assorti de remparts, de cheminements et d'ouvertures pour l'artillerie, la résidence et le donjon.
