Tuscany is the fifth largest region in Italy. Wedged deeply like a triangle in the heart of Italy, it constitutes a transitional, area between the Po Delta and Liguria, which are highly industrialized, and those Italian regions which are still principally agricultural. It stretches over the western side of the Apennines and includes the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. It lies on the sea to the west and south-west and borders with Liguria to the north-west, Emilia-Romagna to the north, the Marches and Umbria to the east, and Latium to the south-east.
Its limits are clearly defined to the north but less evident to the east, crossing the main ridge of the Tusco-Emilian Apennines and taking in the upper Val Tiberina, becoming even more uncertain to the south-east and south where they appear to be justified only for historical, linguistic and generally cultural reasons.

Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, Lajatico - Pisa in Toscana
La chiesa parrocchiale fu costruita agli inizi del secolo XVI in sostituzione della più antica situata nel castello, di cui oggi è visibile solo il portale. Nel 1509 il vescovo di Volterra consacrò la chiesa come pievania. Nel corso dei secoli la chiesa ha subito diversi rimaneggiamenti, il più significativo agli inizi dell’Ottocento quando fu abbattuta la parete nord e furono ricostruiti tetto e campanile. Nel 1816 il titolo di pievania fu modificato in Arcipretura.
Il soffitto della chiesa, costituito in un’unica navata, fu abbellito nel 1816 con pitture dei quattro evangelisti; il primo organo Tronci risale invece al 1846. All’inteno della chiesa si ammira l’altare maggiore in pietra serena ed un pregevole crocifisso del secolo XVII, recentemente restaurato. Alla chiesa parrocchiale è annessa la chiesetta della Compagnia, una istituzione laica del 1641 con scopi assistenziali ed umanitari.
