Massa Carrara in Toscana - Castello del Piagnaro
Pontremoli, definita da Federico II “chiave e porta dell’Appennino”, fu oppidum medievale e borgo mercantile, luogo d’incontro di importanti vie di valico, fra cui la Francigena, nei secoli XII e XIII fu sede di libero comune. Qui, dopo il rinnovamento settecentesco, medioevo e barocco convivono. Il Castello del Piagnaro, situato sopra la collina soprastante il borgo, sorge intorno all’anno mille, a controllo del sistema viario e diventa parte integrante del sistema difensivo della città.
Il suo nome deriverebbe dalle lastre in arenaria utilizzate per la copertura delle abitazioni, le “piagne”. Il complesso è diviso in due livelli: il più antico è raccolto intorno alla coorte superiore, dominata da un imponente mastio a pianta semiellittica dotato di accesso autonomo, mentre l’altro nucleo (non anteriore al XVI secolo) si sviluppa più in basso e circonda la corte maggiore.
